Fillings restore teeth that have been victimized by decay and protect what is left of them. They provide a sturdy surface for chewing food without fear of discomfort. However, fillings all need to be replaced at some point.

Depending on the type of filling you have and with proper care, they can be with you for 5 to 20 years. Eating and drinking lend to wearing them down, though this is expected. Clenching and grinding your teeth also lend to this. Tooth decay can also return, which can really reduce a filling’s lifetime.

Fortunately, you can visit the dentist to know if a filling is compromised and needs replacing. All it really takes is attending regular checkups.

The dentist uses a tool known as an explorer. The explorer helps him examine the filling’s edges for cracks or wearing. It does so gently, so do not worry about any discomfort. X-rays can help him further examine the filling, especially for signs of tooth decay underneath it.

Don’t worry if a problem is spotted. Fillings can be easily replaced, and the dentist may help you find the type that will best serve you. The dentist can also help you know how to make it last for as long as possible. Tooth decay can also be dealt with to stem any discomfort it may cause you.
