At Gunnerson Dental, Dr. K. Cheyn Gunnerson believes that dental restorations should be aesthetic. Repairs to the teeth and gums may be needed when problems arise, including infection, disease, or decay. With treatment from our team, patients can obtain the care they need to look and feel their best. This includes natural-looking repairs such as dental crowns.
A dental crown is a restoration used by dentists to place over a natural tooth to strengthen and repair it. Crowns are sometimes called “caps” and are made of porcelain, a dental material that closely resembles natural tooth enamel. In creating restorations with porcelain, the dentist can ensure that the final repair looks just like the rest of the teeth.
Dental crowns are often recommended for patients who have a tooth that is severely decayed or damaged. If the tooth cannot be repaired with a simple filling, then a dental crown may be necessary to protect the tooth’s remaining structure. In some cases, a dental crown may also be placed over a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy. It helps to protect the tooth further and prevent future problems.
The process of obtaining a dental crown takes only a single visit to the dentist at Gunnerson Dental. The tooth will be prepared for the crown during the beginning of your reservation, and a digital impression will be made. This impression is sent to our in-house dental lab, where your custom restoration will be specially designed just for you by Dr. Gunnerson.
The crown design is then sent to the crown cutting machine, also known as a ‘Cerec’. Once the crown has been cut and cured the dentist makes sure that the fit is just right and that the color matches your natural teeth. Once you are satisfied with the final restoration, the crown is permanently cemented in place.
