Laser Bacterial Therapy

Hi, I’m Mindy, a hygienist with Gunnerson Dental. Today I’m going to talk to you about laser bacterial therapy. During your hygiene appointment, the hygienist may recommend that a laser be used to reduce the amount of bacteria that is found in your gums. Usually when your gums bleed easily, such as when you floss, it’s due to inflammation of the gum tissue. This inflammation is caused by bacteria residing in and around your tooth. This bacteria is different than the bacteria that causes tooth decay, and if left untreated can lead to gum disease, a serious disease that can destroy the bone supporting your teeth. This treatment is so comfortable that anesthetic or numbing the gums before doing the procedure is not necessary. Most patients notice a significant difference in how much healthier their gums are following this treatment. We want to make sure that your teeth last a lifetime, and the use of laser bacterial reduction therapy is one way we can help you have a healthier mouth.

Gum Disease

Hello, my name is Mindy. I’m a hygienist here at Gunnerson Dental TMJ and Sleep Therapy of Utah. And today I’d like to talk to you about mouth rinses. The first mouth rinse I would like to talk to you about is a Chlorhexidine mouthwash. The name brand is Peridex. The generic name is Chlorhexidine Glutamate. Now this mouthwash is usually prescribed if you have periodontal disease or if you have a serious mouth infection. And to use this for periodontal disease, we recommend that you use it for only two weeks. The way that you’re going to use this is you’re going to take off the cap and inside you’ll see a measured marker of 15 milliliters. You’re going to fill up to that 15 milliliter line. Take that solution, swish it vigorously throughout your mouth for 30 seconds, and then you’ll be spitting it out. We recommend that you don’t rinse your mouth out afterwards.
Now, one of the things that you may find with Pex is that it can alter the flavor of your food. You need to use this once in the morning and once at night. The morning time. We would recommend that you use it after you’ve eaten your breakfast so that you don’t have that flavor interference. If you were to use it prior to eating your breakfast, it’ll just make the experience a little bit more pleasant for you while you’re on this mouth. Rims. Now for periodontal disease, again, we only recommend that you use this for two weeks. Two weeks is an adequate amount of time to control the bacteria that we are eliminating from your mouth as well as if you go longer than that, Peridex has a tendency to stain your teeth. Now, it is a stain that’s external, meaning it can’t go in and manually remove it.
It’s not embedded inside the teeth, but it is an external stain that can look very unpleasant until you’re able to come in and have that cleaned off. So that’s why we recommend you only use it for the two weeks. You don’t need to use it longer than that for periodontal treatment. However, if you’re using it for a serious mouth infection that’s been prescribed by the doctor, he may recommend a longer period of time for you to use this. And if that is the case, for sure, use it for a recommended amount of time that the doctor has prescribed for its use. The second mouthwash I’d like to talk to you about today is an Essential Smiles mouth rinse. Now the Essential Smiles Mouth rinse is an all natural mouthwash. It has essential oils in it like peppermint oil, menthol eucalyptus, cinnamon clove. All of these are antibacterial essential oils, which is very beneficial for your mouth to eliminate the harmful bacteria that we would prescribe this for.
Now, this is really good for treating gingivitis. If a hygienist recommends this Essential Smiles mouth rinse, you just use a cap full, swish it for 30 seconds and spit it out. It’s always nice to use it morning and night for the best freshness of your breath. Once a day is probably adequate, but we do recommend using this twice a day for optimum benefits. There is no staining associated with this, so that’s another benefit. Aerosol is another mouth RIN that we recommend. Now Rasol like the Essential Smiles, is also used to treat gingivitis. Rasol is also non-staining, but some people don’t like the stronger essential oil flavors, so they may choose to go for just a standard peppermint as their preferred flavor of choice. Now this aerosol is a mint flavor and you would rinse it in the same way as you would the Essential Smiles mouth rinse, recommended twice a day, rinsing for 30 seconds, and then spitting it out.
There’s no need to rinse these out afterwards. Always just use spit out. Whatever’s left in your mouth is fine for you to be able to swallow. I mean, obviously you’re not going to be swallowing a large amount. Just whatever the flavoring that’s left in your mouth after you get spa out from the fourth mouthwash that I’d like to recommend to you today is permed. Now, permed might be recommended to you if you have sensitive teeth and if you have a tendency to get cavities frequently, because permed also will fight bacteria, but it also has fluoride in it. Now that fluoride is going to help build up a sensitivity protection on your teeth if you have
That sensitivity issue as well as the permed fluoride will help with cavity prevention. You’ll help build up the, strengthen those weak areas
Of your teeth to help reduce the amount of cavities that you’ve been getting. So the way that you would use permed is a little bit different than these other three mouthwashes that I’ve recommended. Permed needs to be mixed with water. So you take, and it has the instructions on the back, but what you’re going to do is take a couple pumps full into the cup that’s provided and then you fill it the rest of the way to the line with the water, put a cap on it, shake it up really well, and then it’s ready to go. You don’t want to be using this full strength, so be sure that you dilute it. And we also recommend that you use this twice a day, once in the morning, once in the evening, and do not rinse your mouth out afterwards. It’s really important for that fluoride to remain on your teeth as long as possible, and the little amounts that you have left in your saliva will continue to help build and strengthen the teeth. So those are the mouthwashes that we have in our office that we may recommend. I hope you enjoyed this video. I hope it was informative for you and good luck using your mouthwashes.
